London is a great place for travel enthusiasts and tourists. Much like its major attractions such as the London Bridge, Big Ben, Tower of London, Buckingham Palace etcetera, there are some secret picnic spots that most of the people are totally unaware about. As compared to the vibrant attractions in London, the picnic spots are less frequently visited. However, some of these picnic spots in London have their own charm, here are some listed below:

St. Johns Lodge Gardens

St. Johns Lodge Gardens is an excellent space for family outing, away from the eyes of most tourists and remains to be one of the best picnic spots famous among Londoners. The park around St. Johns Lodge Garden is called the Regent Park and it’s the largest grass area in Central London. Regent Park has an Open Air Theatre, cafes and restaurants and vicinity to the London Zoo which make it a perfect place for a family outing. Henry VIII used The Regent’s Park as a hunting ground way back in his time. The Regent’s Park then had wooden boundaries and a surrounding ditch which now has transformed into a stylish garden and a sports field.
The park opens 365 days a year from 5:00am BST onwards till the sun goes down.

If you are a tourist and you are looking for the quickest way to travel around in London, then you should travel by London Underground (it is also called Subway and is better known as the “tube” in UK). The name “The Tube” has been derived from London Underground’s circular tube-like tunnels and platforms. London has the world’s oldest and probably the most brawny, inclusive and comprehensive underground systems built 120 years ago. Unbelievable? Believe it. The first section of the London Underground was opened in 1863.Tube started as early as 1890 in rest of the sections and is probably the first metro project to operate electric trains in the world. London Underground connects Greater London and the bordering areas of Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Essex in the UK.

The London Underground Signage or Logo.

Overcrowding on the Underground has been an issue and a major concern for years. Since the tube is very crowded in rush hours people choose to travel by buses as well. Tube is on the other hand comparatively a much faster medium to travel. London is famous for its Night buses. Night buses are the only public transport in London after midnight and since the tube works from 5:30am to 11:30pm only, if you are late, you know that you have to take a night bus. All night buses have N prefixed and they start from Trafalgar Square.

The Tube has Ticket inspectors patrolling in both plain-clothes and uniforms with hand-held ticket checking devices called Oyster card readers. Any passenger found travelling without a ticket valid for their complete journey is required to pay £50 or £25 if paid within 21 days penalty fare. Under the Regulation of Railways Act 1889 passengers can also be prosecuted for fare evasion which has a fine up to £1,000 or an imprisonment of three months. So travelling with a ticket is recommended.

Whereas safety is concerned, no accidents are caused by the Tube; all accidents are caused due to overcrowding on the platforms. A majority of accidents on the network are believed to be suicides where people jump in front of a train. Now the London Underground has pits beneath the track at deep tube stations. These pits were originally put up to aid in seepage of water from stations but now serve as a life-saver. If at all a passenger falls or jumps in front of a train; these pits help prevent death or serious injury. There are rumors too that people who had committed suicide by jumping in front of a train, their ghosts haunt the tube stations at midnight.

Tube has a Platform for Art and Poems. You can find poster and billboards dedicated entirely to poetry and artwork, better known as graffiti these days. This adds to the enrichment and enhancement of passengers’ journey in an amiable beautifully carved environment of class aesthetic value. The Tube has also been televised in several movies and television shows. Some classic movies which feature the London underground are Tube tales, Neverwhere and Sliding Doors and amongst the most recent ones is of course the Matrix – Triology.

Tube is world’s oldest metro which started in 1863 and covered 403kms then. Now London Underground has extended its reach and serves as the United Kingdom’s foremost public transport. It is also ranked above other competing metro systems from Paris, Madrid, Berlin and Copenhagen.

There are several magnificent hotels nearby tube stations. Enjoy a comfortable and peaceful stay. Do you still need reasons to travel in London Underground? If you have not been to London and you are planning to visit London, make sure you explore the Tube. The tube connects remotest of places in United Kingdom, takes you to places in a jiffy, and is very affordable. So unless you wish to sit behind an old English cab driver and decide to listen to opera music , take a tube , let rock music play in your headphones and get ready for a wonderful travelling experience.

What is Polo?

The game of Polo consists two teams of equal number of players and is played on horsebacks. The objective of the game is to score goals against the opposing team. Riders carry the plastic or wooden ball using a long-handled mallet. The game originally consisted of 7 players in a team when it was adapted from Manipur. A popular and more evolved version of the game, known as the Arena Polo, is also practiced, which has a shorter field of play (usually 100 yards whereas field polo has 300 yards) and only 3 team players.
